26 Oklahoma
Oklahoma’s track record when it comes to queer rights has been nothing but abysmal. According to Oklahoma’s Equality Profile by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), Oklahoma scores a 1.5/21.5 on their Sexual Orientation Policy Tally and a -6.75/23 on their Gender Identity Policy Tally. This gives Oklahoma an Overall Tally of -5.25/44.5. There are plenty of reasons for this negative score; however, the main reason is the plethora of laws attacking transgender individuals. Laws including a Religious Exemption Law, Child Welfare Services laws, laws restricting the education of queerness, and laws attacking transgender students regarding bathrooms and sports. Most recently, Governor Kevin Stitt signed an Executive Order titled the “Women’s Bill of Rights”, creating a new legal definition for the word “woman” in Oklahoma. This executive order directly attacks transgender individuals. Organizations such as We Are Rising, a grassroots movement fighting extremism in Oklahoma, have called out the hypocrisy of Stitt’s order as he claims to be protecting women yet restricts access to legal abortion statewide.
