23 Carroll’s Travels

We present a collection of books belonging to Professor Emeritus of Classics at Pomona College, Harry Carroll, to understand where he might have collected sherds and the challenges of working with unprovenanced artifacts. Many of these books are guides to archeological dig sites and ancient cities, most of which date to the 1960s, although the range is 1900-1985. As you will see, many focus on sites in Cyprus and Athens. Unfortunately, we do not have the exact dates of his travels. Perhaps the guides’ publication dates might give us an approximation of when he was traveling.

These books came from Harry Carroll’s personal library and were being discarded. We found the books dumped outside of Pearsons (the building that houses the Classics Department). Had they been discarded, we would have known even less about Carroll’s travels and the sherds.

All images of books were scanned from Carroll’s collection and will hopefully be accessible in the Pearsons library.
