- An Outline History of East Asian to 1200, by Sarah Schneewind. This gives a general overview, but it is a good introduction and look-up tool. It is freely available.
- China and East Asia to the Ming Dynasty, by George L. Israel
- An interactive timeline with a map and basic events in Chinese history summarized.
- A running list of sources for Chinese philosophy (the goal of this manifesto is to diversity philosophy as a discipline).
Primary Sources
- Ctext, excellent resource for many pre-modern Chinese texts. The menu on the left side does not include all the resources stored on this website. Many of the classics in the Chinese tradition present both Chinese text and English translations that are still valid for a first read of this material. It is not however quotable in a research paper.
- Translations of the Leibniz-Bouvet Correspondence, by Alan Berkowitz and Daniel J. Cook.
Databases
- China Bibliographical Database, a database with information about individuals from the 7th to the 19th century.
- China Knowledge, an excellent site that provides reliable information, with annotations on where this information was taken. Wikipedia is equally useful IF footnotes and references are provided.
Visualizations & Maps
- A visual sourcebook of Chinese Civilization.
- A visualization of the territorial extensions of different ruling powers throughout time.
Podcasts & videos
- An interview about The Secret History of the Mongols.
- The podcast The History of China, which has also a website, is well-informed.
- Wu Zetian is the only woman who ever managed to hold the throne in Chinese imperial history. She also introduced new graphs in Chinese writing: check this video by Imre Galambos about it.
