The residual damage that pervades indigenous communities from Correa’s government is evident in how his presidency is regarded. As previously mentioned, Correa’s administration is viewed through a ‘gift of grace’ (Weber 1919) lens because of the progressive “post-neoliberal” policies implemented during his regime. Correa designed a constitution, with the assistance of indigenous leaders, that emphasized the rights of indigenous people and incorporated indigenous ideology. However, his administration failed to implement and honor constitutional provisions to preserve the extractivist model. The usage of the targeted approach and the presence of technocratic paternalism treats indigenous groups as passive actors in policy while also destroying community relationships. Instead of uplifting indigenous voices, Correa’s government aided in silencing them.
